Without a living tradition of European martial arts, in-depth research into a historical fighting art and its context is inevitable. This comprises examination of extant period weapons and related artifacts, traumata on skeletal remains, as well as contemporary accounts of combat. Most of all, the analysis of transcribed and translated fechtbuch material forms the basis for reconstruction of fighting techniques. However, expertise in martial arts is required. Constant practice and application in sparring, supplemented by experimentation with replica arms, serve to validate technique reconstruction.
